I believe that intentional personal development is super important for humanity, for the evolution and the progression of the human race.
Human life has been improving ever since the caveman days. True, there were ups and downs in the progress of civilization, but on the whole, life has just gotten better. Some of these improvements were genetic, but many of them were technological. Our modern life has its challenges, but we no longer panic to survive, fear wild beasts or starvation. We have legal systems, insurance, medical care, and lots of technology to help us live and work more freely. Everything from plumbing, a washing machine, to devices that help us communicate and travel across vast distances. There’s an argument to be made whether these advances have brought more happiness and enjoyment, though. But I think happiness and enjoyment are more within the personal grasp of most every human living today.
That’s where intentional personal development comes in. Sure the human race is going to continue to develop and progress, but what’s next? I believe the next frontier of human evolution is psychological. Our technologies have helped make humans more productive and live longer, so now we can focus on the quality of life. And with a greater life quality comes increased production and progress. That’s the secret of the happiness advantage. Happier people simply do better.
That’s the central goal of intentional personal development, to live happier, more fulfilling lives. And that comes with understanding and using techniques (or psychological technology) to overcome psychological limitations to our happiness and fulfillment in life. No, we don’t need an army of psychologists. Humans just need to adopt at the very basic level of societal knowledge and behavior that will improve their life. They need to proliferate, teach, and adopt into their lives the technology of intentional personal development.
“Would humans do that?” you ask. Would humans adopt a new behavior based on knowledge or technology. We wash our hands, don’t we. We cook our food. We clean our homes and bodies. We have adopted so much knowledge about what we have learned into our world to improve life that it just seems second nature. When the germ theory was “discovered,” the quality of life around the planet began to benefit and improve. Yes, maybe on an individual level there are some people who don’t wash their hands. But life on the whole got just a bit better.
That was important. That helped improve and progress humanity. The principles and methodologies of personal development are just like that. We are now starting to really understand childhood trauma and how to address it. Yes, there are some horribly difficult things you should get a professional to help with, but for the most part, the whole of humanity can benefit from this developing knowledge. We can metaphorically wash our hands in a psychological sense.
It could be as simple as setting goals, reflecting on past negative experiences, using techniques like meditation, life strategizing, or stress reduction. Everything from sleep to relationships to financial management. Techniques can be taught, learned, and applied in the life of every single Earthling.
Just imagine a whole planet of people who are switched on, in tuned, who have dealt with and overcome psychological blocks of their past, who have truly tapped into their full potential and unlocked their true genius, who are living happy and fulfilled lives. Yes, there will still be challenges, but it would be a happy people that work through things systematically as they come up. Yes, there will be other emotions of sorrow, grief, and disappointment, but everyone in that society will have the tools to receive and respond productively and supportively with those emotions. That’s the next evolutionary step for humanity. I think a world like that would be absolutely stupendous. Such a civilization would be able to grow and progress leaps and bounds.
That’s why intentional personal development is so important to the future of humanity.
What do you think? Do you think that this is the next step of human evolution? Do you think that such a society is possible? If humans as a whole continue to improve, where will we as a species be in one thousand years?
